A Special Event:
Dinner With The Wines Of Colle Massari and Grattamacco
Occasionally at Laudisio we like to throw something special together for
no real reason at all. Coming in June we will partner with our friends
at LiquorMart and host one such special event: a Wine Dinner featuring
two of Italy’s best winemakers from Colle Massari and Grattamacco.
Our very own Mark Kretz, Sommelier extraordinaire, has put together an
evening you won’t want to miss. You will be treated with Chef Sakima's
menu, custom made for these wines, and have an opportunity to meet these
winemakers directly.
Colle Massari and Grattamacco
6:30pm Tuesday June 8, 2010
($65.00 per person + tip & tax )
Claudio Tipa (Colle Massari)
Claudio Tipa was born in Tunisia in 1948, from Italian parents of Sicilian origins. His grandfather had a vineyard and an olive grove located on the coastline South of Tunis that is now home to the resort of Yasmine Hammamet. While still a child, Claudio fell in love with nature and viticulture.
His family moved back to Rome in 1962 when Tunisia gained independence and all Europeans were forced to leave, but the passion for the vineyard continued to occupy a special place in Claudio’s heart. In Italy he embarked upon a 30-year career in industrial security and control systems, while at the same time cultivating and expanding his knowledge of wine. In the late 1970’s he participated in the original wine classes organized by AIS (Italian Association of Sommeliers) at the prestigious Hilton Hotel in Rome. During the following years he frequently traveled to France to study its most famous wines, as well as other countries renowned for producing world-class wines.
In 1999 he discovered Colle Massari and identified it as the perfect location to make his lifelong dream come true: to establish a ‘domaine’ in Tuscany.
This new adventure is shared with his wife Maria and his sister Maria Iris, who was married to the late Fabio Bertarelli, founder of the pharmaceutical giant Serono. Their son, Ernesto Bertarelli, is the proprietor of Alinghi, the sailboat that won the most recent America’s Cup, and Colle Massari is an official supplier to the Alinghi campaigns.
Maurizio Castelli (Grattamacco)
Maurizio Castelli was born in Milan in 1948 and graduated Agricultural Studies at the Università di Milano in 1972. Since 1973 he has been living in Tuscany and as of 1980 he has been General Manager of two premier wine and extra-virgin olive oil producers in Chianti. He has worked for the last 7 years as Technical Inspector for the wine and olive oil producers of the Consorzio del Chianti Classico Gallo Nero. Currently, he is working as a consultant for some of the most important producers in Tuscany, Umbria, Friuli, California and Chile: Collemassari, Grattamacco, Badia a Coltibuono, Barberani, Bastianich, Boscarelli de' Ferrari, Castello di Radda, Col d'Orcia, Mastrojanni, Illy, La Palazzina, Piancornello and others.
Thanks to the vast knowledge and experience acquired in Tuscany, he helped starting a production of extra-virgin olive oil in South Africa and since 1990, he has been the consultant of the McEvoy Ranch, (Marine County, California) the organic, award-winning producer of Tuscan extra-virgin olive oil and olive trees nursery.
